Obedience to lawful authority is the foundation of manly character
DAILY Reflection - By Dr Tan Tek Seng

“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.”
Romans 13:1-2
In a world rich with differing perspectives, fostering understanding and compassion is essential for coexistence.
A recent incident at JB Mall, where an elderly man slapped a young man for eating during Ramadan, highlights the urgent need for understanding and respect in our diverse society. While the man's actions stemmed from deeply held religious beliefs, they violated the young man's rights and broke the law. The case took a surprising turn, initially with a guilty plea, then a challenge, and finally a new charge of assault. The potential consequences – a year in jail, a fine, or both – underscore the seriousness of the situation. This incident forces us to confront the delicate balance between personal freedoms, cultural sensitivities, and religious practices. Ultimately, it reminds us all of the importance of the Golden Rule: treating others as we wish to be treated.
Romans 13:1-2 reminds us to respect and obey the authorities in our lives. This means living honestly and working for justice. By doing so, we contribute to a society that is just and peaceful, honoring God's authority over all human institutions.

“Obedience to lawful authority is the foundation of manly.”
