“The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7
Humans are often quick to make assessments based on physical appearance and social status, God’s evaluation is deeply rooted in the character and intentions of the heart.
Kenneth Lay was the founder, CEO, and chairman of Enron Corporation. Enron was once considered a model of corporate success, boasting high stock prices and a reputation for innovation in the energy sector. However, behind this façade, Enron's leadership was engaged in unethical practices, manipulating financial statements and concealing massive debts. The company may appear healthy and successful to the outside world, but its executives’ actions revealed a lack of integrity, honesty, and a commitment to ethical principles.
The giant energy company filed for bankruptcy in 2001 after a series of accounting irregularities, costing thousands of employees their jobs and savings. The founder was subsequently indicted on multiple charges of fraud and conspiracy, but he died before his sentencing.
1 Samuel 16:7 encourages us to look beyond the surface when judging others, valuing inner character and integrity over outward appearances. It reminds us that God prioritises the heart, challenging individuals to cultivate their own inner qualities that reflect God’s nature.
“Create a beautiful inside and you will look more beautiful on the outside.”
